Credit Card Ka Smart Use Kaise Karein? Benefits, Hidden Charges Aur Meri Personal Learning

Part 1 – Credit Card Kya Hai Aur Kaise Kaam Karta Hai?  How does a credit card work? A credit card can be an easier way to pay for everyday items, but it’s worth understanding the basics before you start using one. A credit card allows you to borrow money to spend, up to a pre-set limit, as opposed to a debit card which takes money directly from your account. You may avail of this facility for shopping, online transactions, booking tickets/travel and other purchase available for this facility. The bank will then generate your bill after the billing cycle. Emergency Fund Kya Hai? 3-6 Mahine Ka Backup Kaise Banaye Beginners Guide

Did you ever have an emergency, bike repair, and suddenly lost job and said, "Yaar ab paise kahan se laun, salary toh 20 din baad ayegi"? That panic of needing money quickly and borrowing from friends or paying by credit card at very high-interest-that is exactly why you need an emergency fund.

See, most beginners think emergency fund is meant for rich people or for old people. No, actually emergency fund is most important for beginners and students as you have less money and even a single emergency could push you in debt trap. The catch is that the emergency fund is not an investment; it is a safety net which helps you to stop falling into debt when things happen.

I too didn't have emergency fund for 1 year. When my phone was broken, I borrowed 8000 from a friend. Bike repair was for 3500 which I had to do by credit card with an interest of 12%. Later I created an emergency fund of 10k, and next time, when I had medical expense of 5000 out of which 1k was paid from the fund, with no worry, no debt. The feeling of, "I managed on my own" feels great. Let me explain it to you simply me.

What is Emergency Fund? In Simple Hindi Language

Dedicated saving reserve set up to meet any unforeseen financial expenses or emergencies. For job loss, medical bills, bike repair, car repair. Separate from regular savings & daily expenditures. Gives financial cushion without taking debt.

Emergency fund simply means those funds which are kept in an account separately for only emergencies. Such as bike broken, medical bill, job gone, something broken in your house. This fund is not for your daily expenses nor for investments. Just for emergencies.

Take an example your monthly expenditure is 15k (rent, food, transport, electricity). You will create an emergency fund of 15k x 6= 90k. When an emergency arises, you can take money from that account, no need to borrow money. And again fill it gradually. This is your financial safety net without taking any debt.

Different from regular savings-Regular savings you keep for your goals like travel, bike, or trip. Emergency fund is only for emergencies. Also, separate from daily spending-Daily spending you keep in current account, while your emergency fund in high-yield savings account.
Why It Matters – Kyu Zaroori Hai? 4 Fayde

1. Protects from Debt in case of Emergency – Karz Se Bachata Hai

Credit cards or loans not required in case of emergency. When emergencies arise and funds not available people swipe their credit cards at 36% interest, or take a personal loan at 20%. Having an emergency fund will make loan unnecessary. You can use your own money, no interest.

2. Relieves from Stress and Anxiety – Tension Kam Karta Hai

It is obvious that when there is a backup one sleeps peacefully. The fear of losing job will be reduced because you know that you have a 3-6 month backup. There won't be anxiety about where the money will come in case of medical emergency. Peace of mind gives, which is more valuable than money.

3. Keeps long term financial plans intact – Bade Goals Kharab Nahi Hote

In absence of an emergency fund, one tends to destroy his/her long-term investments – withdraw from SIP, withdraw fixed deposit and withdraw money from retirement fund. Emergency fund ensures long-term investments like retirement fund stay safe, nothing to destroy. Long-term financial plans can track easily.

4. Gives peace of mind and stability – Stability Deta Hai

The foundation of financial stability. When there is a backup one can make better decisions – quit a toxic job, wait for a better opportunity, without fear of finances. Confidence comes with stability.

How to Build – Kaise Banaye? 2 Steps

1. Calculate Expenses – Kitna Chahiye Calculate Karo

Add all monthly expenses – housing, food, utilities, insurance, transportation. Multiply by 3-6 to get your savings goal.
Calculate monthly essential how much you spend. Make a list: Housing (Rent)-5000, Food (Groceries) 4000, Utilities (bijli, paani, net) – 1000, Insurance (health, bike) – 500, Transport (petrol, bus) 1500. Total= 12,000. These are essentials, without which you cannot survive.
Save Automatically - Set Up Monthly Transfer To Savings On Pay Day

Set up a monthly transfer to your savings account on pay day. Even starting small-$25-50 a week is enough. Treat it as an absolute must-pay bill.

Put the labels separated by commas.

Manual Saving Doesn't Work - Automatic Saving Works. On pay day only, set up the automatic transfer to another account which you would label "For Emergencies Only". If salary is 20k then first pay day of the month set up 1000 transfer automatically. Live on remaining 19k for the month. The things that do not come in sight don't spend.

Start small-825-50 a week is quite enough. 300-400 a week means 1200-1600 a month = 15-19k a year. Start small, later you can increase. Consider this as an absolute bill-you have to pay the rent every month, same way you have to put the money in your emergency fund. Treat it as a bill.

Trick-Increase the contribution to your emergency fund whenever your income increases. Put 50% of increment in your emergency fund till your goal is achieved.

Where to Keep - Kahan Rakhne Ko?

3 Options

1. High Yield Savings Account - Best Option

Easy access, earn interest. High yield savings account is the best place for your emergency fund- earns you 6-7% interest, and money can be withdrawn within 1-2 days. Liquidity, safety, stability. Better interest than regular savings, more liquidity than FD.

Options

Location

2. Money Market Account - Safe & Liquid

Safe & Liquid. Money market account is also safe & liquid, gives little bit higher interest than savings, however requires higher minimum balance. An option, however simpler than high yield savings.

Must be stable & liquid. Don’t keep your emergency fund in stocks, crypto, mutual funds. As you never know when the emergency may come, and if the market goes down then you will have to sell it at a loss. Your emergency fund should be stable & liquid and shouldn’t depreciate, can be withdrawn anytime. Stocks are volatile, thus not suitable for emergency fund.

Target: 3-6 months of expenses. Start by saving for 3 months then increase it to 6 months. You may even save till 12 months if freelance or unstable income.

My Personal Observation

At first, I felt that the idea of having an emergency fund was ridiculous since I am young and what emergency would come. Then my bike's engine stopped – repair bill was 6000. Didn’t even have 1000 separate. Used credit card and paid back 18% interest rate over 2 months.

Then I decided to build up my emergency fund. Calculated my essential expenses: 10k per month. Target = 3 months: 30k. Started with 500 per month automatically transfered. Initially 2 months I only had 1000 but I kept going. In 6 months saved 3000. Later on got 2000 from freelancing, added that into my emergency fund. 10 months I had 10k.

Then my phone was damaged – repair cost 8000. This time I had 10k in my emergency fund. Paid from my fund, no debts, no stress. Then later in next 3 months added back 8000, 1000-1000. The sense of “I’ve handled this situation myself, didn’t borrow from anyone” is priceless.

Now I have 6 months backup-60k. Less worried about job loss since I know that I have backup for 6 months. It gives peace of mind. Realized that emergency fund is not investment but insurance. It’s like insurance, ideally shouldn’t be needed but should exist.
